Billed as the “most famous fictional horse of the century”, Walter Farley’s Black Stallion was a favorite of Gans’s daughter. Her passion, and Gans’s own interest in the equine form, led to his drawing this pencil sketch in 1981. It now hangs in his daughter’s house.
