Doggie in the Window was inspired by a black and white photo in the newspaper. The window was located in a home in Old City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Intrigued by the reflections, Gans broke out his water colors and painted a vibrant portrait of this cute pup around 1975. Originally a gift to his mother, it now hangs on his wall.
