Animals sneak into your heart, and so it was with Cody, the Black Lab mix who arrived in Gans’ home when his son returned from a stint in the Marines. Gans’ wife was not a dog person, but she and Cody quickly bonded, and were inseparable for the next 15 years. Gans drew the pencil sketch as a memorial in 2012.
